A $56-million expansion of the St. George wastewater treat plant is expected to begin in January.

County of Brant council awarded the project contract in September. It is supported by a $35-million grant awarded to the county through the Ontario government’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund. Brant received the maximum amount available under the program.

The expanded wastewater treatment plant, built in 1989, will support the construction of new homes in St. George, said a news release from the county. Home construction has been limited by wastewater treatment capacity issues.

About 1,350 homes approved for development in St. George are expected to be built over the next couple decades.
