The Timmins underwater rugby team hosted a land rugby team from Sudbury in a unique mashup weekend last Saturday.

“Our teams played together in a clinic involving dry land activities, underwater basics and drills, culminating in some friendly matches,” said Alex Gervais, team coach with the Timmins Seals.

Players from the Voyageurs, the co-ed rugby team from Laurentian University, were curious about the sport’s underwater version, and were also looking for more local rugby competition.

Most Ontario rugby teams, both on land and underwater, are in southern Ontario.

Voyageurs captain Makanya Esengi was unable to find a pool with the regulation diameters of 3.5-5 meters depth, 12-20 meters length, and 8-12.5 meters width.
