Organizations across Vermont have been working to keep food on pantry shelves and on families' tables and asking for donors and volunteers as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for November are set to disappear.

With the federal government shutdown dragging on, the U.S. Department of Agriculture warned that it no longer has the funding for SNAP, also known as food stamps, which provides monthly money to low-income people to help them afford groceries.

Vermont administers the money through a program called 3SquaresVT, and state leaders rolled out stopgap money to fund the program for the first half of the month.
