A fire caused by “improper disposal” of fireplace ashes in a mining pit outside a home in the Sugarloaf area was extinguished Wednesday afternoon.
Just after 2 p.m., crews were dispatched to a home on Lost Angel Road for a fire burning brush and wood debris in the mining pit, according to Mike De Fries, Sugarloaf Fire Protection District battalion chief.
Sugarloaf firefighters used a water, a hose and hand tools to keep the fire from spreading. They then dumped an entire tank of water on the fire, using nearly 7,000 gallons of water in total in an effort to extinguish the fire, De Fries said.
Firefighters planned to check on the site of the fire Thursday to ensure there is no chance of the fire rekindling.
Fireplace ashes and coals should be stored in a metal, nonflammable container aw
