The U.S. Coast Guard has referred the tragic sailing camp crash in Biscayne Bay that left three young campers dead over the summer to the Department of Justice for possible criminal prosecution, officials said Thursday.

Coast Guard officials said the July 28 collision between a construction barge "being pushed by the uninspected towing vessel Wood Chuck" and the sailboat carrying the campers was being referred for seaman's manslaughter involving the towing company.

"After conducting a thorough marine casualty investigation, we’ve referred this case to Department of Justice for criminal investigation to ensure full accountability and help deter similar cases in the future," Coast Guard Sector Miami Commander Capt.
