A five-year-old girl has died after she was hit by a ute while riding a scooter outside a primary school in north-west Sydney.

Emergency services rushed to Rouse Hill Public School on Clower Avenue about 3.45pm after reports came in of a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle.

Officers were informed a five-year-old girl was riding a scooter on the footpath before she was struck by a Toyota Hilux.

The young girl was treated by paramedics before being transported to Westmead Children's Hospital in a critical condition.

Police confirmed she later died in hospital.

The driver behind the wheel of the Hilux, a 42-year-old man, was taken to Blacktown Hospital for mandatory testing.
