Minneapolis police say a man was fatally shot Thursday morning, apparently after confronting someone who may have been trying to break in to a vehicle outside his workplace.

Police were called just before 7 a.m. to a report of a person down outside a business on 32nd Avenue South, near the Midtown Greenway. The victim died at the scene.

Police Chief Brian O’Hara said investigators believe the man had gotten to work early and confronted someone in the parking lot.

“It does appear that (the suspect) had been rifling through the car in attempt to steal something,” O’Hara said. “I don’t have any indication that even a theft occurred, but it does appear that this was an attempt to commit a theft from the vehicle — which is an incredibly petty and minor offense for someone to lose their life
