Hundreds of students in Edmonton walked out of their classes Thursday to head to the Alberta legislature and show support for teachers who were forced back to work.
Students also demonstrated at the Alberta Teachers’ Association building in west Edmonton and in front of several schools around the province.
Bill 2, the Back to School Act, was passed by the Alberta government early Tuesday morning, hours after it was tabled the previous day.
The bill ended the provincewide teachers’ strike that started Oct. 6. The legislation invoked the Charter's notwithstanding clause to shield it from court challenges.
It forced 51,000 public, Catholic and francophone school teachers back to their classrooms — and imposed a deal on them that was rejected by 90 per cent of the teachers who voted on it
