Toledo’s iconic Cakewalkin’ Jass Band paid its respects to one of its most beloved musicians Wednesday night by gathering for a private memorial service at — where else? — the Original Tony Packo’s Restaurant in East Toledo.

About 25 people, mostly past and current band members, came to have a meal together, look at old pictures, and swap stories about the late Frank Ward, who spent 37 years with the group as its primary cornetist.

Mr. Ward, a resident of Glass Peaks Senior Living in West Toledo, died Oct. 5 at 95.

His body was cremated. He did not wish to have traditional funeral services, according to Cakewalkin’ founder, clarinetist and bandleader Ray Heitger.
