BUFFALO, N.Y. — Nearly half a century after his death, questions still surround the killing of James “Chick” Hewson, a decorated rower, Olympian , and World War II veteran whose legacy continues to inspire those who knew him.
Hewson was 60 years old when he was killed while working a night shift as a bridge tender at the Ferry Street Bridge in Buffalo. The case remains unsolved, but for those who knew him best, Hewson is remembered not for his tragic death — but for the remarkable life he led.
“I was just a 16-year-old boy. He was 39, approaching 40, and he inspired me for a lifetime,” former teammate Tom Graham said.
