AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Experts have confirmed as many as 30 measles cases in Spartanburg County in South Carolina’s upstate, just a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Augusta.
Experts link the outbreak to two elementary schools with low vaccination rates.
The latest data from the Centers for Disease Control shows Georgia has an 86.8% rate for MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccines. South Carolina’s rate is a little better at 91.2%.
Dr. Ioana Chirca, a Wellstar infectious disease specialist, would like to see these rates increase.
“We would need to be above 95% to achieve herd immunity for measles,” Chirca said.
12 On Your Side requested data to see if our local school districts might be any closer to that herd immunity goal.
