An additional batch of ground cinnamon products were recently recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration over elevated levels of lead.
DEVI-brand and BaiLiFeng-brand ground cinnamon were added to a growing list of recalled spice products that dates back to July 30, 2024. According to the FDA, samples of both products were collected at a retail establishment, the Thursday, Oct. 30 notice reads.
"Through product testing by state programs and confirmed by the FDA, the FDA has determined that the ground cinnamon products listed ... contain elevated levels of lead and that exposure to these products may be unsafe," regulators said.
In the months since the first advisory was issued, the FDA has provided various updates, warning consumers to throw away and avoid purchasing the affected products.
Here's what to know about the ongoing ground cinnamon recall, including a list of impacted spices.
FDA will continue to test cinnamon for toxins
While no illnesses or adverse effects have been reported in connection with the affected products, prolonged exposure "may be unsafe" and "could contribute to elevated levels of lead in the blood," the FDA found.
Officials warned that young people are "particularly vulnerable" because of their smaller body sizes, rapid metabolism and growth. High levels of exposure to lead in early childhood can lead to neurological effects such as learning disabilities, behavior difficulties and lowered IQ.
Working alongside state partners, the FDA will continue to analyze and review samples of cinnamon sold directly to consumers and at import.
