SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- With technology, AI and cryptocurrency becoming more common, scammers are finding new ways to trick victims. This year, there have been 82 thousand consumer complaints involving scams in South Dakota.

"We're plagued with those annoying text messages, calls, emails," said SD Attorney General Marty Jackley. "One of the best opportunities we have in South Dakota to prevent that is to arm our citizens with information about the scams."

There are many ways that scammers make their messages seem believable.

"Scams sometimes or oftentimes are cyclical," said Erik Gaikowski, state director for AARP. "So, November will be veteran scams because it's around Veterans Day. Thanksgiving to Christmas it'll be holiday scams."
