California police are investigating a major museum theft.
More than a thousand historical artifacts stolen from the Oakland Museum of California’s off-site storage facility earlier this month.
The burglary happened in the early morning hours of October 15th.
Among the missing items, handcrafted jewelry by renowned metalsmith Florence Resnikoff, Native American baskets, scrimshaw tusks, and 20th-century memorabilia like campaign buttons and athletic trophies, pieces that tell the story of the Golden State.
Museum Director Lori Fogarty says the theft is a loss not just for the museum, but for the entire community, urging the public to watch for the items at flea markets, antique stores, or online.
Investigators believe it was a crime of opportunity. Oakland Police are working with the FBI’s art crime team, checking online resale sites like eBay and Craigslist.
The museum is hoping, as in a 2013 theft case, that public tips will help bring the stolen artifacts home.
No arrests have been made. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
