BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
Grace Klein Community is addressing food insecurity by hosting drive-thru food giveaways. This is something the organization has been doing before the current government shutdown began.
One of their drive-thru food giveaways happens at Liberty Church Birmingham from Monday through Friday each week. Normally, they would see about 50 people in line for pick up at the church. However, Jackson King, who works with the Grace Klein Community, noted a significant increase in demand starting last week.
"200 to 250 increase around the board at all of our different locations, King said."
The shutdown has led to uncertainty, especially around the dinner table. King explained that whether people are not getting paid due to the shutdown or are worried about SNAP benefits running
