DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa Capitol Bureau) - The U.S. and China have agreed to a new trade deal that will bring soybean exports back to American farmers in exchange for lower tariffs, but some Iowa farmers are expressing skepticism about the agreement.
Under the deal, China will purchase at least 12 million tons of U.S. soybeans for the remainder of this year and 25 million tons every year for the next three years.
Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman, a fifth-generation farmer, said union members are wary of the new agreement.
He said President Donald Trump’s tariffs on China come at a time when farmers already feel they’re headed toward a farm crisis.
