In a pair of interviews on sports talk shows Thursday, Gov. Jeff Landry clearly said he would not pick the replacement for fired LSU head football coach Brian Kelly — but continued to criticize Athletic Director Scott Woodward.
Landry’s appearances followed fiery remarks the governor made Wednesday about LSU’s coaching situation that quickly went viral online.
Landry on The Pat McAfee Show said he only got involved in Kelly’s firing to protect taxpayers as the university searches for the money to pay out Kelly’s contract, which is worth over $50 million.
“If we have to pay $53 million, and somebody else doesn’t step up to foot that bill, the state of Louisiana has to foot that bill. That is in the contract,” Landry said.
