TRAVERSE CITY — The Cherry Capital Tax Share Initiative presented a proposal Thursday morning to amend Michigan state law, allowing Traverse City Tourism and local government to share the local room tax collected from hotels, motels, and short-term rentals.
Currently Traverse City Tourism receives 100% of lodging tax revenue, which goes directly toward marketing efforts. The goal of the Cherry Capital Tax Share Initiative is not to defund these marketing programs but to divide the room tax more evenly to help local governments maintain roads, beaches, and infrastructure that both residents and tourists rely on year-round.
