A back-and-forth between San Jose and Caltrans over cleaning up homeless encampments on state-owned land has ended thanks to a new agreement.

The city will take over encampment cleanup operations from Caltrans at 13 sites owned by the state, and Caltrans will pay part of the bill. It's an agreement the state has already made with other cities, including San Francisco.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom made the announcement Thursday, but San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan pointed out it’s something his city has requested for years. Mahan even chided Newsom a bit on social media and at a news conference for taking credit for the new deal. But he did say the end result is better than debating Caltrans each time over who should be clearing the encampments.
