Don’t be surprised if glimpses of Vancouver Giants rookie defenceman Lance McCloskey’s game remind you of former Vancouver Canucks blueliner Kevin Bieksa.

McCloskey, 18, is a 6-foot, 190-pound right-shot rearguard from Newport Beach, Calif., who’s putting up steady, dependable minutes for the Giants in the early going of this WHL season.

McCloskey played the past two campaigns with Fairmont Prep, an academy program in Anaheim, Calif., and his coach there was Bieksa, the 10-year Canucks veteran. Last season, Fairmont made it all the way to the USA Hockey High School Triple A national championship finale, where they fell 3-2 in overtime to vaunted Shattuck-St. Mary’s of Faribault, Minn.
