BOISE, Idaho — Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica with devastating force this week, leaving much of the island without power and countless families displaced. The impact is being felt far beyond the Caribbean — including in Idaho, where members of the Jamaican community are doing what they can to help.

Associate Pastor Jason Williams of the Cloverdale Seventh-day Adventist Church in Boise said his parents and siblings survived the storm, but the destruction to their homes and community has been immense.

“Several of their rooftops are gone,” Williams said. “We’re talking about aunts and uncles and cousins, grandparents.”

Despite widespread power outages affecting roughly three-quarters of the island, Williams said he’s been able to stay in contact with his family through WhatsApp.
