Less than two weeks after President Donald Trump publicly declared he doesn’t like Canberra’s man in Washington “and probably never will”, Kevin Rudd made a public appearance in Australia seemingly unfazed.

Speaking at the Sydney Investment Summit on Thursday, the former Prime Minister outlined a vision to elevate Australia’s financial sector into “the natural future centre for operations for the wider Indo Pacific”, with a particular focus on the nation’s superannuation funds.

“When the enterprise began, Australian supers were known by the US funds management industry, but not much beyond that,” Mr Rudd told the audience, noting the potential to turn super funds into “a whole new pillar of the US-Australia relationship”.
