ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Time is running out for lawmakers in Washington to agree on a deal to end the government shutdown and ensure thousands of families in Georgia have food.
SNAP benefits are expected to run out this Saturday , which means food banks will begin to feed people who have never relied on their services before.
On Thursday, several city leaders, including Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and the Atlanta Community Food Bank, announced emergency assistance for people who are set to lose their SNAP benefits.
Dickens said a moratorium on evictions on city-owned and city-sponsored properties will be issued. There will also be a pause on water shutoffs citywide. Both measures will be in place until Jan. 31, 2026.
