A 21-year-old woman has died after being struck by lightning during a soccer training session on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon at the Cooroy Sporting Complex as thunderstorms rolled through the area around 5 p.m. Paramedics quickly arrived and transported her to Nambour Hospital in critical condition, but she could not be revived.
Queensland Police confirmed that a report will be prepared for the state coroner regarding the incident. The Cooroora United Football Club, where the training was taking place, released a statement on social media expressing gratitude for the quick actions of those present, including emergency services. They stated, "those in and around the grounds, including both members and emergency services, showed admirable action, respect and care for each other."
The club also urged its community to remain respectful online and to avoid speculation about the incident. They encouraged anyone affected by the tragedy to seek support, acknowledging the distress experienced by witnesses.
This tragic event occurred shortly after the Bureau of Meteorology's radar system experienced a crash, which coincided with severe storms affecting parts of southeast Queensland. The weather bureau has faced criticism for the timing of its new website launch on October 22, just weeks into the storm season, with some state politicians claiming that lives were put at risk due to the technical issues.
Looking ahead, more severe weather is anticipated over the weekend, with forecasts predicting supercell storms to impact the southeast region of Queensland again on Saturday. Authorities are urging residents to stay alert and take precautions as the weather conditions remain volatile.
