Lansing — The more than $300 million in tax dollars set aside for school safety and mental health initiatives in the state's $84 billion spending plan comes with a significant caveat that is giving schools across Michigan pause about applying for the money.
To apply for the funds, school districts must agree by Nov. 30 to waive the attorney-client privilege in the event of a mass casualty event and to comply with a comprehensive investigation into the casualties — a measure that school groups worry will make it difficult to find insurers willing to partner with them.
