TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Pima County Supervisor Matt Heinz is directing county administration to send emergency funding to local food banks as the ongoing government shutdown threatens SNAP benefits starting this weekend.
Heinz plans to request $600,000 be sent to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona and $200,000 to the Sahuarita Food Bank and Community Resource Center during next week’s supervisors meeting.
The Sahuarita Food Bank and Community Resource Center has experienced its busiest month in more than a year and a half in October. Executive Director Carlos Valles said more than 400 families have visited within the past few days, with many lining up hours before the facility opens.
