CHARLOTTE, N.C. – With SNAP cuts looming, some experts suggest handing out non-perishables to trick-or-treaters, in addition to candy. The cuts to SNAP will affect two million people in the Carolinas alone. This comes amid the second longest (as of this publishing) federal government shutdown in U. S. history. Nonprofit groups, parents, and dietitians are among those calling on community members to hand out non-perishable food items along with candy on Halloween, in order to potentially assist some of the 42 million Americans currently served by SNAP.
