EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- Daylight saving time is ending at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2. This is your reminder to not only set your clocks back an hour, but also to check your smoke alarms.

The Las Cruces Police and Fire departments are encouraging homeowners to check their smoke alarms and add new batteries when daylight saving time ends.

Additionally, homeowners should also test their smoke alarms to make sure they work. To test your smoke alarm, press and hold the alarm's "test" button. If it beeps or rings loudly, it's a working alarm.

Las Cruce Fire warns homeowners that smoke alarms should not be tested by lighting a candle or matches under the detector. "Repeated use of heat or smoke to activate the device can cause them to malfunction when an actual fire occurs."
