GALVESTON

Islanders are invited to the opening Wednesday of the newly redeveloped Sandhill Crane Soccer Complex, a project long-awaited by Galvestonians eager to get back on the field.

The complex has five lighted soccer fields designed for both children and adults that are big enough they could be used for seven or eight games at a time, Spokeswoman Marissa Barnett said.

It also has bathrooms that double as storm shelters, bleachers, a 1.5-mile concrete walking path, a basketball court and lighting and irrigation around the complex, the city said.

There’s also parking for just more than 300 vehicles and future plans to add a playground to the 26-acre facility, the city had said.
