Afghanistan has issued a strong warning to Pakistan following a fragile ceasefire agreement reached after tense negotiations. Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani stated that Kabul's patience should not be seen as weakness, emphasizing that any further provocation would lead to a "crushing" response. His remarks came after both nations agreed to a truce in Istanbul, mediated by Turkey and Qatar, aimed at preventing further border clashes that have resulted in casualties on both sides.
Haqqani highlighted that protecting Afghanistan's territory is a top priority, but he also expressed openness to dialogue. He noted, "We have fought the emperors of the world and it is no difficulty for us to defend our territory." He accused unnamed countries of violating Afghan sovereignty to protect their interests, reiterating that Afghanistan may lack heavy weaponry but possesses strong determination to defend itself.
Despite the ceasefire, the border remains closed, leaving many trucks and refugees stranded. Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid affirmed Kabul's commitment to resolving disputes through diplomacy, advocating for relations based on mutual respect and non-interference.
In Islamabad, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif reiterated Pakistan's demand for Afghanistan to take effective action against militant groups operating within its borders. Tensions escalated earlier this month when Pakistan conducted airstrikes in Afghanistan, prompting accusations from Kabul of violations of its sovereignty. Both countries are scheduled to meet again on November 6 to establish a monitoring system for the ceasefire, as the world watches closely for any signs of renewed conflict.
