Regarding your Sunday, Oct. 26, front-page article, “ Lawmakers are rethinking public events :“ After reading the article, two glaring facts stand out. First, according to a table in the article, the incidence of political threats against Congress investigated by the Capitol Police was at 902 in 2016. The same table listed 8,008 threats investigated in 2023.

The second glaring as well as disturbing fact is the escalation shown before President Donald Trump’s second term, when the reported threats tallied “9,474 concerning statements and direct threats against members of Congress in 2024.” While Trump was not yet in office at this time, his influence was present. This was an increase of threats in the neighborhood of 1,000% from 2016.
