LEXINGTON, Ky. — Almost 65,000 children in Head Start —the federal early-learning program for low-income families—are at risk of losing access because of the government shutdown. Funding for the programs cannot be dispersed until the government reopens.
That includes 400 families served by Central Kentucky Community Action Council based in Lebanon. Executive director Bryan Conover said grant disbursements take place at different parts of the year for the thousands of Head Start programs nationwide.
“We’re really just in an unfortunate, unlucky situation that we happen to be a Nov. 1Lebanon, grant recipient,” Conover said.
Conover said with no sign of their around $8 million coming from the federal government, CKCAC has had to make tough decisions to continue operations of Head Start.
