I’m one of around 11 million private renters in England. Just one person whose life will be fundamentally changed by the Renters’ Rights Bill that became law this week. One person who, after 46 years living in rented accommodation, knows precisely what an insecure, degrading and dehumanising experience it so often is. Especially since becoming more than just one: now a mother of a son, as well as a renter.
All of us renters have a wild story , and eye-watering numbers that tell it. Here’s mine: my first 18 years were in social housing , the last 28 renting privately. I’ve lived in 26 houses and flats.
