By day’s end in court, it was clear the Crown and defence agreed on one fact about the mental health of Laureano (Laurence) Bistoyong, who killed his younger cousin Mark Bistoyong in cold blood with a large kitchen knife.

Both sides accept testimony from two forensic psychiatrists who said earlier this week that Laurence has schizophrenia, a serious and incurable mental-health disorder.

What is at issue is the extent to which his mental illness should be taken into account in his sentence in the second-degree murder case.

Dr. Jason Quinn, a forensic psychiatrist based at the Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care in St. Thomas, testified Thursday to present a second opinion on Laurence’s mental health, as requested by the Crown.
