A three-year-old British girl, identified only as Matilda, has died after spending 12 days in hospital following a tragic incident at a hotel swimming pool in Greece. The incident occurred on 14th October in Lardos, a resort village on the island of Rhodes, while Matilda was on holiday with her family. Matilda was found unconscious at the bottom of the pool after her 44-year-old uncle, who was responsible for supervising her, allegedly left her unattended for approximately 10 minutes. A British doctor present at the scene jumped into the water to rescue her and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. She was initially taken to the General Hospital of Rhodes, where she was intubated, before being transferred to a hospital in Crete and later airlifted back to England. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, 26th October. Following the incident, Matilda's uncle and a 54-year-old travel agency manager have been arrested and are facing charges related to her death. They are joined by the 57-year-old hotel owner and the hotel’s director in the investigation. Reports indicate that safety measures at the hotel were inadequate, with no lifeguard on duty, no rescue equipment available at the pool, and no designated supervisor present. The uncle’s lawyer, Antonis Zervos, stated that his client “did not see and was not near the child.” Meanwhile, the hotel manager’s lawyer contended that the pool was not large enough to legally necessitate a lifeguard. Doctors informed Matilda's family early in her hospitalisation that the brain injury she sustained was irreversible. Michalis Sokorelos, the director of the hospital, described her condition as “brain dead,” stating, “The child obviously stayed in the water for a long time. She is not reacting at all.” This tragic incident has raised serious concerns about safety protocols at holiday resorts, particularly regarding the supervision of young children in swimming areas.
