Plenty of us have fond memories of trick-or-treating as kids ... but not Hilary Duff !

We ran into her back in 2013, and our camera guy mentioned he'd received pennies when he was a kid ... prompting her to tell her own worst Halloween inedible treat story.

Check out the clip ... what's worse is she got them from an old-school Hollywood star -- and although she figured he would've been cool enough to have given out full-size bars, she got a pointy reminder to do her homework that night instead. No trickery this year ... stock up on candy so you don't end up ruining another future star's treats!
