1FREEHOLD, NJ – A man was killed Monday evening after being hit by a vehicle while crossing a busy stretch of Route 36 in Long Branch.

Police say the crash happened just after 6 p.m. near the intersection of Route 36 and Branchport Avenue.

The victim, identified as 74-year-old Fernando Pinho, was attempting to cross from the southbound side of the highway to the northbound lanes when he was struck by a BMW SUV.

He was transported to Monmouth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 9 p.m.
