SARASOTA, Fla. ( WWSB ) - Millions of Floridians are expected to lose food assistance this weekend as the federal government shutdown drags on.

Nearly 3 million people in Florida rely on SNAP to pay for groceries.

On the Suncoast, food banks are already starting to see an uptick in people coming in.

Volunteers at Harvest House in Sarasota said their numbers have increased significantly in the past two weeks because of the government shutdown. They said they usually serve around 200 to 225 families every Thursday, but now have served more than 300 families.
