"I have incredible respect for Chris and his family, and I want to thank him for his many contributions to the Miami Dolphins over the past 26 years," Ross said.
The news comes hours after the Dolphins were routed 28-6 by the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football to drop their record to 2-7.
Grier, 55, began his NFL career with the New England Patriots and has been with the Dolphins since 2000, starting as a scout.
He became Miami's GM in 2016.
