EAST LANSING — The Michigan State University Board of Trustees on Oct. 31 approved plans to reopen requests for proposals for a significantly scaled-back Spartan Gateway project.
The vote came six months after the board signed off on a plan to build a $150 million Olympic Sports arena, which is not part of the new plan, as a centerpiece of a public-private partnership that would have included a hotel, private housing, restaurants and other developments. The arena, which was to be paid for by MSU, was meant to serve as a home for the university's non-revenue sports, including gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling. The rest of the development, at the corner of Harrison and Trowbridge roads at the western entrance to the campus, was to be paid for by a private developer.
