WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — There was a rare and spooky sight this Halloween after two barges shifted down the shoreline from Milford to West Haven.
"We came down here and couldn't believe the size of them," Ashley, a West Haven resident, said. "They are huge."
West Haven fire officials have been working to get the lines from the barges to the tugboat to pull them into deeper water — but it has not been an easy process.
The plan to remove them has been moved to 7 p.m. due to west winds and the tide going out.
The mystery vessels are 140-foot-long hopper barges from Buchanan Marine. They are used to ship materials like dirt and rocks.
Two West Haven residents say they heard loud noises from their home and assumed it was the trash collectors picking up the garbage.
