JD Vance, the US Vice President, has strongly defended himself against accusations of insensitivity towards his wife Usha Vance's Hindu faith. The controversy arose after he expressed hope that Usha would one day embrace Christianity during a recent Turning Point USA event. Vance described the allegations as "disgusting" and clarified that Usha has no plans to convert to Christianity.
In his remarks, Vance stated, "It's weird to throw your wife's religion under the bus, in public, for a moment's acceptance by groypers." He emphasized that their marriage is built on mutual respect and communication, despite their differing faiths. Vance acknowledged that Usha often attends church with him and their children, who are being raised in the Christian faith.
Responding to criticism, he said, "My wife is the most amazing blessing I have in my life. She encouraged me to re-engage with my faith many years ago. I hope she may one day see things as I do, but I will continue to love and support her regardless of her beliefs." Vance also highlighted that faith is a personal journey and should be approached with respect for individual choices.
The backlash included comments from the Indian-American community, with some accusing him of being dismissive of Hinduism. Former Indian Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal noted that Vance should more openly acknowledge Usha's Hindu roots. Vance's comments have sparked discussions about interfaith marriages and the challenges public figures face when discussing personal beliefs.
