NEW YORK (PIX11) --- The NYPD will be adding 5,000 police officers to the force in the next few years, bringing the total to 40,000 cops in the department, officials said Friday.
The phase-in will begin in July 2026 with 300 officers, then 2,500 in July 2027 and increasing to 5,000 annually in July 2028, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
Adams is investing more than $315 million to support the phased-in hiring of the additional 5,000 officers by July 2028, officials said.
“The vast majority of New Yorkers want more police officers on their streets and in their subways, and that is what we are delivering by adding these 5,000 new officers," Adams said.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said the new cops will help bring crime down as the department continues to deliver record-low shooting
