SAGINAW, MI — A jury was not convinced by a Saginaw man’s account that he shot and killed his brother-in-law in a library parking lot in self-defense. At the same time, jurors didn’t believe the defendant went to the library intending to kill his in-law.

Jurors in the trial of Derrick J. Grant deliberated for one hour and four minutes on Thursday, Oct. 30, before finding the defendant guilty of second-degree murder and felony firearm in the death of Henry J. Ford.

While second-degree murder is a life offense, it allows for parole. A first-degree premeditated murder conviction would have mandated Grant, 38, never walk free again.
