MADISON (WKOW) -- Gov. Tony Evers (D-WI) signed a bill into law on Friday that requires all school boards in Wisconsin to adopt rules banning cellphone use during school hours.

The Republican-authored bill, which garnered some bipartisan support, mandates that school boards create their policies by July 1, 2026.

Now known as 2025 Wisconsin Act 42 , the legislation states that school-issued electronic devices are exempt from the restrictions, and that school boards may allow exceptions to their bans in emergencies, in situations perceived as threats, in cases that impact students' health care, for students' individualized education plans or for teacher-authorized educational purposes.
