CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Two Head Start programs in Ohio will close Monday if the government shutdown continues to block federal funding from reaching classrooms.

The Highland County and Scioto County Head Start programs will turn off their lights without funding Nov. 1, according to Julie Stone, executive director for Ohio Head Start.

“It’s heartbreaking- you know it’s really dedicated staff who want to be in those classrooms and serving those children,” Stone said.

The closures will impact 700 children and 150 staff members, Stone said. The programs will remain closed until the government reopens or alternative funding is found.

“A head start program just really can’t operate without federal funding,” Stone said.
