LONGVIEW, Texas (KETK) -- The City of Longview and local nonprofits are working to meet an increase in demand after the government shutdown is expected to prevent SNAP benefits from reaching East Texas households.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that 13% of households receive SNAP benefits, while approximately 15.1% of households live in poverty.

To meet this demand, Longview city officials and nonprofits will hold a food drive on Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Longview Convention Complex.

The most needed items for the drive include: • Canned Beans (including Pinto Beans) • Canned Chicken • Canned Chili • Canned Fish (Tuna) • Canned Fruit (including restaurant-sized) • Canned Meats • Canned Soups (including "cream of" soups) • Canned Stew • Canned Vegetables (inc
