The Washington Post editorial board issued a stinging rebuke to congressional Democrats over their shutdown strategy.

The Post editorial on Wednesday accused Senate Democrats of holding “the government hostage” by refusing to advance the House-passed stopgap spending bill in the Senate. And it directed pointed criticism at Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who has said his party will continue blocking the GOP measure until Republicans negotiate an extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits before they expire on Dec. 31.

With more than 600,000 federal workers on furlough and nearly 42 million Americans set to lose access to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on Nov. 1, the board called the Democrats’ plan “ untenable .”
