The testimony of the family of a Portage la Prairie woman killed by a criminal who was out on bail was “incredibly powerful” and may have been a tipping point for federal lawmakers, says Portage-Lisgar Member of Parliament Branden Leslie.
Michelle and Ron Best, the parents of Kellie Verwey, 28, who was killed in a car accident in January by an offender in breach of his bail conditions, appeared before the House of Commons Justice Committee to share their story on Tuesday, October 28.
Leslie, who arranged to meet the family in Ottawa, said the Bests were the first victims or victims’ families to appear at the study on bail reform, which was initiated by the Conservative party.
“There was a lot of silence in the room when everyone was listening to Michelle’s opening remarks,” Leslie said
