KENNEBUNK, Maine — After President Donald Trump amended Title IX, aiming to reinforce definitions of biological sex, some Maine school districts were left to decide how, or if, they would enforce the changes. That decision has led to rising tensions in school communities across the state.
Now, one of the latest districts under the spotlight is RSU 21, which serves Arundel, Kennebunk, and Kennebunkport.
Melissa Wentworth, a parent of two girls in the district, said the issue has quickly escalated.
“All of a sudden we’ve seen it everywhere,” she said.
Community members have increasingly voiced concerns over transgender students participating in sports and using bathrooms that align with their gender identity.
